"Evokes a big yawn"

The movie is all about the mysterious missing of Yamuna Prasad, one among the popular music director duo, who was busy working as the Judges of a reality show. The basic premise of the reality show and its participants sounded interesting initially but proved futile within minutes as we realize that the director is all set to throw in plastic caricatures of the participants, show producer and the the likes. And with the judges duo nudging the female participants for everything beyond the normal to stay in race, havoc break loose as Parasurama Pattery, someone working under cover arrives at the scenes to clear off the wrong doers.

Pattery is presented as a sanyasi settled at Rameshwaram, cruising around in his Innova, colorfully clad in single tone attires and always chanting Shanthi mantras.Days after we find the the chopped arms of the missing musician from a public bin and the police lead by C I Wahid Abdul rahman Haji(Kalabhavan Mani) arrests pattery for the deed. Later Pattery is shown leaving the station in grace, due to no clear evidences against him. Then both the C I and pattery works in their own ways to find clues to the lost person who is mysteriously labeled as already dead.

The movie is more a melodramatic rendition on the lives of a poor, cobbler and his only girl child, played by Baby Diya. ‘Thavalam’ takes its clues from a large number of movies like ‘Bhoothakannadi' to the nineties hit 'Aakashadoothu' to make a storyline for a movie that lasts just below two hours.

He is a cobbler by profession but also does some menial jobs to make a living. The movie which made headlines much before the release, primarily due to the international crew associated with the project and for the lavish budget that was being offered, lives up little to the expectations. The movie has Mohanlal as Albert Samson, the middle aged, and much ambitious and renowned architect. A Known master in constructing churches, his custom to climb up the completed castles to perform a dedication ceremony was always widely admired with surprises by the masses. Having reached the pinnacle of his profession, with a singular pursuit for fame and glory, he had been sacrificing his personal life and ethics. He lands up in further turmoil as younger generation under him, asks for professional freedom. Samson has already pulled down his mentor Abraham, who is now in his death bed with a last wish of seeing his son Alex, an assistant to Samson, as an independent builder. Samson has also crushed the peaceful life of his wife Alice, who is now left mentally unstable, following the untimely death of her twin children and parents. Into this hardened design of Samson's mind arrives a spirited girl, Hilda Varghese, who slowly but hypnotically prepares him to climb down the way of the ambitions, realizing the real tragic consequences.

The movie which is snailishly paced even in its one and half hour narratives largely remains as a play pictured on a film. Faltering largely to give visuals to the ibsenisque symbolisms, many of the celebrated imageries like ''Nine dolls'' and every ''curious stories'' attached with the discourses between Hilda and Samsun lay flat in the ill constructed script lines. At times the visuals move to left and right as if we view in a proscenium and the actors follow the light patches in circles and rectangles, not bettering anything than in a drama stage, with little eye for cinematic wizardry.

Antony now arrests Devan (Mohanlal), a poor trader who was on an outing to Kochi. Devan's mother (Sukumari) and sister (Kavya Madhavan) pleads for help before Remesh. And here too the ace criminal lawyer finds points to get Devan out of the jail, unscathed. But here starts the tale of twists, which continues form reel to reel for the next two hours.

What works heavily for ‘Twenty: 20’ is that it lives up to its name-just like a 20:20 match, you can't predict what will happen in the next reels. Just when you fix this as the last twist in the tale, will arrive the next that will keep you in tight seats

The bulk of the movie is concerned with Colonal Mahadevan's (Mohanlal) Battalion's strategic operandi that led to the recapture of the hilly Kargil terrain. Though a portion of the movie is used to explore the feelings, fears and hopes of the soldiers involved, thereby recreating the manoeuvres and comment on the futility of war. Granted, I would liked to have had an explanation about how the war got started and the gruesome details on what really got everyone to the point of arms, and how the Indians strategically retorted, but it wasn't necessarily told in the film.

'My Mother's Laptop' has Suresh Gopi as Ravi, a famous theatre artist who returns home after thirty long years, to find that his mother slipped into a coma state following some terminal illness. Enmeshed in an array of guilt and deep regrets of having deserted her, Ravi tries to complement by being with her all the days in hospital, rejecting his career and passions. He even can't accommodate his girlfriend Payal, who arrives back from Calcutta to console him and persuade him to return to his profession.
The film has several concealed layers of complexity about a man who is virtually lost in the memoirs of his mother and the love for her. The film explores how love can drift into obsession and how desire kindles uncontrollable emotions. The suggestions of Oedipus and of bedsores in the unmovable beautiful body, to the specimen taken after a total abdominal hysterectomy suggest so many manifestations of meanings as never before.

Innathe Chintha Vishayam

Cast : Mohanlal, Meera Jasmine, Suganya, Asokhan, Vijayaraghavan, Mohini, Muthumani, Kripa, Mamukoya, Baby Nivedhitha
Direction : Sathyan Anthikkad
Production : Antony Perumbavoor
Music : Ilayaraja - Gireesh Puthencherry

The movie opens with the voice over of the director who presents three different couples in the verge of disseverance. Dr .Murali Krishanan (Mukesh), the most successful dentist in the city is more interested in having female associations, more than often. He hides them from his wife Teresa (Sukanya), even by assigning male names for them in his mobile. One fine day he is in a tight corner with his wife raiding his mobile contacts, and for evading the conflicts associated, he walks out of her life even leaving his daughter Lakshmi.
The second family, Pithambaran (Vijayaraghavan) and his wife Premila (Mohini) with their lovely children Malavika and Madhavan are leading a good life. But due to increased possessiveness for his wife, Pithambaran returns home from gulf throwing away his good job, and starts escorting his wife all along. He even develops inferiority complex which further complicates things for Premila, ultimately resulting in continuous fights and separation.
And in the third family, Rehna (Muthumani) is not able to continue with her lawyer profession due to the orthodox attitude of her husband and his family. She too walks out of his life, and starts working independently into the lives of these three ladies who starts living separately arrives, G K alias Gopakumar, a garment exporter. He has bought the house where Teresa is staying away from her husband Muralikrishnan. Now left in a difficult situation which does not allow G K, to throw out Teresa and her daughter, to establish his office, Gopakumar is trying newer ways to get the couple together. And in the process he meets the other similar ladies who happen to be friends of Teresa. The film follows how G K with his fashion designer Kamala and land Broker Immanuel, succeeds in getting the feuding couples back to lives of reunion.

Mohanlal as G K don't have anything exceptional and is repeating the Good Samaritan act for the umpteenth time, but still it is a pleasure watching him in a role that seldom goes larger than life. There may seem to be some exaggeration in the portrayal of the idealist Gopakumar, but Lal is effortless in presenting the character convincing, with least obvious loopholes. The director who is also credited with writing the script integrates many topical issues in the story, but this time he is consciously making them the centre of our attention in every now and then sequences. The idealistic lines goes up to the level of preaching in the later half, which partially destroys the charm of narratives.

Creating comical plots around a handicap appears to be the latest mantra in our films. 'Annan Thampi', too is yet another formula friendly adoption of such a story of twins, born within a difference of 90 seconds, who are at loggerheads with each other since childhood. The problem with them is that one is dumb and the other is verbose. To avoid more casualties due to sibling rivalry, one is sent to Pollachi with his uncle and other stays back with his parents. Appu the eldest of the twins is a vitriolic troublemaker, and erstwhile associate and present enemy of Dharmarajan (Rajan P Dev), who's niece Thenmozhi (Laxmi Rai) is madly after Appu.

On the other hand, a dumb Achu is the softer one who is unlucky enough to take the brunt of others in his shoulders. He and his wife Lekshmy is assisting his father Ravunni (Janardanan )in recreating the Puranas for their ballet troupe and is even ready to portray the roles of puranic characters in folklore, along with fellow artists played by Suraj, Salim Kumar and Harishree Ashokan.

Even after years, the brothers continue their fight when ever they see face to face. But soon major misunderstanding created by enemies pop up and the brothers starts calling for each others blood. And as usual, just before the finale, they understand the real reasons behind their enmity, which makes them, reconcile and fight as one against the baddies.
