"Evokes a big yawn"

The movie is all about the mysterious missing of Yamuna Prasad, one among the popular music director duo, who was busy working as the Judges of a reality show. The basic premise of the reality show and its participants sounded interesting initially but proved futile within minutes as we realize that the director is all set to throw in plastic caricatures of the participants, show producer and the the likes. And with the judges duo nudging the female participants for everything beyond the normal to stay in race, havoc break loose as Parasurama Pattery, someone working under cover arrives at the scenes to clear off the wrong doers.

Pattery is presented as a sanyasi settled at Rameshwaram, cruising around in his Innova, colorfully clad in single tone attires and always chanting Shanthi mantras.Days after we find the the chopped arms of the missing musician from a public bin and the police lead by C I Wahid Abdul rahman Haji(Kalabhavan Mani) arrests pattery for the deed. Later Pattery is shown leaving the station in grace, due to no clear evidences against him. Then both the C I and pattery works in their own ways to find clues to the lost person who is mysteriously labeled as already dead.

The movie is more a melodramatic rendition on the lives of a poor, cobbler and his only girl child, played by Baby Diya. ‘Thavalam’ takes its clues from a large number of movies like ‘Bhoothakannadi' to the nineties hit 'Aakashadoothu' to make a storyline for a movie that lasts just below two hours.
Suresh Gopi is Sivan in ‘Thavalam’, an orphan living inside a bus stand at Mayil petty, a village in the borders of the state. He is a cobbler by profession but also does some menial jobs to make a living. In one of his outings, he saves a girl Kanakam (Sindhu Menon) from the grip of some goondas headed by Gouri and in the fisticuffs Gouri kills one of his fellow mates, and is sent to jail. Meanwhile Sivan marries Kanakam, who incidentally is also an orphan. After a year of happiness, she dies after giving birth to a baby girl. Sivan finds his lone living tough but manages to bring up his daughter with the help of local tea shop owner, Panikkar and his family.
Thamara (Rathya), a girl from a gypsy family who makes a living by selling small sculptures of gods, loves him but Sivan doesn’t let her enter his life. With the return of Gouri from Jail, to take a vengeance, Sivan avoids encountering him for the fear of the life of his daughter. But fate has something else in store for him, who has to face the most upsetting twists in his life.

The movie which made headlines much before the release, primarily due to the international crew associated with the project and for the lavish budget that was being offered, lives up little to the expectations. The movie has Mohanlal as Albert Samson, the middle aged, and much ambitious and renowned architect. A Known master in constructing churches, his custom to climb up the completed castles to perform a dedication ceremony was always widely admired with surprises by the masses. Having reached the pinnacle of his profession, with a singular pursuit for fame and glory, he had been sacrificing his personal life and ethics. He lands up in further turmoil as younger generation under him, asks for professional freedom. Samson has already pulled down his mentor Abraham, who is now in his death bed with a last wish of seeing his son Alex, an assistant to Samson, as an independent builder. Samson has also crushed the peaceful life of his wife Alice, who is now left mentally unstable, following the untimely death of her twin children and parents. Into this hardened design of Samson's mind arrives a spirited girl, Hilda Varghese, who slowly but hypnotically prepares him to climb down the way of the ambitions, realizing the real tragic consequences.

The movie which is snailishly paced even in its one and half hour narratives largely remains as a play pictured on a film. Faltering largely to give visuals to the ibsenisque symbolisms, many of the celebrated imageries like ''Nine dolls'' and every ''curious stories'' attached with the discourses between Hilda and Samsun lay flat in the ill constructed script lines. At times the visuals move to left and right as if we view in a proscenium and the actors follow the light patches in circles and rectangles, not bettering anything than in a drama stage, with little eye for cinematic wizardry.

The story starts with the retired supreme court Justice Viswanatha Menon (Madhu) who lands at his ancestral home to have his vishu celebrations with his children (Siddhique, Vijayaraghavan, Sindhumenon) and grandchildren.
The big joint family is all set to celebrate the weekend, assembling from many places, but the family’s weekend plans gets pale with Menon’s grandson ''Arun'' (Indrajith), a medico in Bangalore, is arrested for murder by the tough upright city police commissioner Antony Punnakkadan (Suresh Gopi). Menon hires one of his favorite student and fierce lawyer Ramesh Nambiar (Mammootty) to bail him out. Arun is safely taken care off from the court by Ramesh, but is killed in a few days.

Antony now arrests Devan (Mohanlal), a poor trader who was on an outing to Kochi. Devan's mother (Sukumari) and sister (Kavya Madhavan) pleads for help before Remesh. And here too the ace criminal lawyer finds points to get Devan out of the jail, unscathed. But here starts the tale of twists, which continues form reel to reel for the next two hours.

What works heavily for ‘Twenty: 20’ is that it lives up to its name-just like a 20:20 match, you can't predict what will happen in the next reels. Just when you fix this as the last twist in the tale, will arrive the next that will keep you in tight seats
